You’d lift your voice up to the crowd, chin tilted high
As if to say, “I’m here, I’m proud, I’m confident.”
But the voice in your head, said
“Love me – please love me, I need it so bad.”
I need it so bad…
Not enough love as a child
Not enough love from a man, a woman, an audience, or the whole wide world.
Now we know, Lady Day, it was no picnic,
It was no holiday.
You said, “I need a hero
A hero, or heroine, a hero – oh, just give me what you got.
I need a hero….
Hero or heroine – oh, just give me what you got.”
Not enough love as a child.
Not enough love from a man, a woman, an audience, or the whole wide world.
Now we know, Lady Day, it was no picnic,
It was no holiday.
